Designing and building a home is no small feat, especially when you do all of it yourself! From the drawing board to the nailing of the boards, Todd and Kristin Glandon designed and built this stunning modern farmhouse themselves! Along with their two children, Devin and Dane, they now call this amazing house their home. Building their home on acreage allowed them to site the house as to capitalize on the beautiful views in the best way possible. After marking out each corner of the house, they stood where each room would lay to get a sense of what the view would look like and made adjustments until they felt the views were the best they could be. Due to the covered front porch and back patio blocking the natural light coming into the home, they designed false dormers complete with second story windows to allow natural light to flood their interior space. According to Kristin, they designed the home to have a very simple floor plan without “any wasted spaces”. Throughout the design process, one question they continually asked themselves “is this Modern Farmhouse?” If they did not feel it fit into that category, it did not become a part of their home. Choosing painted vinyl windows allowed them to have black on the inside and outside while staying on budget! This is a great tip when shopping for new windows! Alternating between board and batten and lap siding on the white exterior adds so much visual interest, as does the staggered roof line and contrasting roof color. Keeping the wood railing and ceiling of the porch light and sleek adds to the modern flair of the farmhouse. The gooseneck barn lights add a just the slightest rustic touch to an otherwise modern exterior. Let’s jump right in and check out the beautiful interior!

Going with a twelve lite front door rather than the two and four lite windows seen through out the rest of the home is a great way to add visual interest! The simplistic design of the spacious entry way sets the tone for the modern farmhouse aesthetic seen throughout the home.

When designing their home, the Glandon’s analyzed their lifestyle and how they planned to use the space. Because they love having friends over, their floorpan encompasses a voluminous layout made for entertaining! Along the back of the living area are three sets of french doors. Though the last set leads to the office rather than the porch, all three are exterior rated so that they would match. The warm wood used on the beams, mantel and floor add just the right amount of warmth to keep the space from being too modern. Incorporating board and batten on the fireplace and tongue and groove on the ceiling layers texture on the soft color palette used.

Off of the living room, you find the office I referred to previously. I just love all the natural light in this room! Floor to ceiling built-ins designed with a plethora of shelving, cabinets and drawers provides plenty of space to keep everything perfectly organized. Adding a countertop to their built in unit was a very smart idea! It adds so much work space!

In creating a serene, relaxing retreat to call their Master Bedroom, Todd and Kristin carefully thought through each detail to make this a beautiful yet functional space. They chose just the right soothing color palette and warmed up with just a touch of warmth from the wood. To add visual interest and character to their Master Bedroom. Todd designed and built the statement wall you see behind the bed. I love the gorgeous antique doors they hung barn door style leading into their bathroom.

I believe this Master Bathroom was the first room I fell in love with in Kristin’s home! I just love the simplistic beauty of it. Just the right touches of modern with the lighting, subway tile and black windows but having two oversized wood vanities balancing out the room brings it back to that modern farmhouse aesthetic seen throughout the home.

What is a modern farmhouse without incorporating shiplap somewhere? I love the choice of adding it to the Powder Bath. A small room like this is the perfect choice for bold design decisions like the patterned tile and modern sink.

What a spacious laundry and mudroom! One of my favorite ‘hacks’ that Kristin found was to use Ikea butcher block as her wood bench! How smart is that?

For their bonus room, the Glandon’s decided to turn it into a fun game room. With a round table set up for board or card games and a fun ping pong table, this is a perfect spot to spend the afternoon as a family. I love the dressers she added that are just perfect to store games and activities.

Going back to the original question Todd and Kristin asked themselves throughout the entire design, build and decor process, “is this Modern Farmhouse?”, I think they nailed it! Every single aspect of the home is a perfect balance of modern and farmhouse aesthetic. They also did a fabulous job of designing their home around the entertaining that they like to do. With a wide open interior floor plan plus the perfect outdoor entertaining space, this home was made for get-togethers! What do you love about the house? What design features would you want to incorporate into your build and what benefit would you hope to gain from them? I would love to hear your thoughts and I hope you enjoyed learning more about this farmhouse! Todd and Kristin, you all did a fabulous job and I am so grateful for you letting me share your beautiful home!
