Strange Farmhouse

Welcome to the Strange Farmhouse! And when I say Strange, it is in last name only! There is nothing whatsoever strange about this farmhouse! In fact, it is absolutely gorgeous with so many unique, one of a kind features that are absolutely stunning. Jake and Cheri Strange based their amazing floorplan on Architectural Designs plan #62544dj , though they did make some custom modifications. Jake is a first responder working for a police department and Cheri is a very inspiring corporate lady in the financial industry. They have the most adorable one year old son named Finn, and he has the cutest red hair you will ever see! Yes, I may be a little obsessed with the red hair as my oldest has red hair as well! In this home, the Strange Family enjoy DIY’s, cooking, making homemade wine, and enjoying the twelve awe inspiring acres they built on. Come join me as together, we tour the home of someone I am honored to call a dear friend!

Jake and Cheri hired S.W. Andwood as their builder and were absolutely blown away not only by his attention to detail but the way he went above and beyond to make their home have extremely special, custom touches by adding some of the most gorgeous woodworking pieces ever. Those unique, intricate pillars across the front of their porch are the first added touch you will see. The Strange’s mixed straight edge shake shingles and horizontal siding on the exterior of their home. Using black shingles for the majority of the roof and black metal roof accents on the overhangs is a great way to not only add visual interest but to save money as well.

The modern farmhouse aesthetic makes for a very welcoming kitchen design and it is done perfectly in this kitchen! The neutral color palette makes it feel light, bright and airy while the natural wood used on the stove hood to warms it up a notch. Adding a splash of color by painting their island blue in contrast to the white surrounding cabinets makes it a gorgeous focal point. Placing the X’s on the ends of the island gives the echo of a rustic barn structure. The runner gives the space a layer of warmth and brings in additional texture. Dedicating counter space as a coffee bar is a perfect way to make guests feel right at home and the trio of windows provides such a beautiful view while preparing a delicious cup of coffee. I love the beautiful metal custom piece on their stove hood! Cheri had that made for Jake as a Christmas present last year. If you look closely, you will notice a tractor at the bottom. Jake has been wanting a tractor for a while so Cheri made sure to “get him one”! What a fun, sentimental piece!

Surrounded by windows, this dining nook feels connected to the world outside in such an inviting way. Rather than a formal, stuffing dining room this area feels like an inviting, casual atmosphere well suited for the modern farmhouse aesthetic and the perfect space to enjoy any meal, from a quick brunch to a holiday dinner. This table was custom built from reclaimed wood that came from an old barn in Upstate New York and it just exudes character. Benches on either side allow for maximum seating.

Talk about a grand family room! While the massive, two story ceiling could feel cold and overwhelming, adding the wooden beams, large ceiling fan and beautiful fireplace creates a stunning space that is full of character and evokes a spirit that is warm and inviting. That gorgeous mantle is yet another one of the special touches added by their builder. He went out into the woods surrounding their home and found a piece of wood he then crafted into this one of a kind mantle.

While I love brick floors, I have heard they are very hard to keep clean. I absolutely love that the Strange family recreated the look of the herringbone brick with tile that will be much easier to clean while still looking so rustic and beautiful! Having the perfect balance of open, closed and hanging storage provides such a great spot to keep the family organized!

From the moment you enter through that absolutely gorgeous, custom built barn door, you know this is such a cozy, intimate master bathroom! The custom built vanity is so perfectly designed! With ample storage space evenly distributed between drawers, doors and cubbies, there is a place for everything! Staining the shiplap behind the tub rather than painting it gives it so much character and allows the true beauty of the wood grain to shine through.

It is not very often that the back view of a home is just as, if not more magnificent than the front view! However, in this case, it just might be! I hope you have enjoyed this tour of the Strange Farmhouse! Full of vernacular materials and a heavy focus on functionality, this home ignores the frills and fancies of the trending styles of today but rather reflects the soul of the Strange Family. It has a relaxed spirit that is warm and inviting just like the family that calls it home!
